We look forward to creating an even greater impact with your help inshallah.
What Is Gift Aid and How Does It Work?
Gift Aid is a UK Government scheme that lets charities, like Mission Relief, reclaim the basic rate of income tax (25p for every £1 donated) on donations made by UK taxpayers. It’s one of the simplest and most powerful ways to increase your impact, without spending a penny more!
To put this into perspective, if you donate £100, Gift Aid turns it into £125 without you paying a penny more. That extra £25 can help provide food parcels, medical aid, or clean water for families, helping even more people in need.
Why Gift Aid Matters: The Bigger Picture
Gift Aid isn’t just a formality or a tick box, it’s a major source of extra funding for UK charities that increase the impact we can make astronomically- up to 25%.
According to HMRC, Gift Aid contributions added over £1.6 billion to UK charities in 2023 – 2024 alone. Since the scheme began, it’s helped deliver tens of billions of pounds in additional support to causes worldwide.
For Mission Relief, this means more wells built, more cataract surgeries funded, and more families supported, without costing our donors anything extra.
Who Qualifies for Gift Aid?
Wondering if gift aid is something you can claim on your donations? We’ve added all you need to know here. You can use Gift Aid if you:
- Are a UK taxpayer (income tax or capital gains tax).
- Have paid at least as much tax as the charity will reclaim.
- Make donations from your own money (not on behalf of someone else).
Even if you’re retired, self-employed, or only pay tax on savings or pensions, you may still qualify.
Note: Higher-rate taxpayers can claim additional tax relief through their Self-Assessment tax return.
How to Opt In (or Out) of Gift Aid
Opting in is quick and easy. Simply tick the Gift Aid box when donating and confirm that you’re a UK taxpayer. You only need to do this once, and it will apply to all future donations unless you tell us otherwise.
If your circumstances change, such as if you stop paying tax, or move abroad, you can cancel Gift Aid at any time by letting us know by contacting us at admin@missionrelief.org.uk.
Transparency and Impact
At Mission Relief, transparency is at the heart of everything we do. All funds reclaimed through Gift Aid are used directly for charitable projects, not for admin or overheads. Thanks to our BPC initiative as well as our 100% donation policy, every penny goes exactly where it’s needed most.
