Fidyah & Kaffarah

When we’re unable to fast in Ramadan, Islam gives us compassionate alternatives — Fidyah and Kaffarah — so that no one is excluded from reward, and no obligation is left unmet.

By giving your Fidyah or Kaffarah through Mission Relief, you help provide life-saving food to families facing extreme hardship in Kenya, ensuring your duty becomes someone else’s relief.

What Is Fidyah?

Fidyah is a charitable compensation paid by those who are permanently unable to fast during Ramadan.

This includes:

  • The elderly
  • Those with chronic or long-term illness
  • People whose health would be seriously harmed by fasting

For each fast missed, Fidyah provides one person with a day’s food.

How Much Is Fidyah?

The recommended Fidyah amount is the cost of feeding one poor person two meals for one day, per missed fast.

If you miss 30 fasts, Fidyah should be paid for 30 people.

Mission Relief uses your Fidyah to deliver nutritious food meals to vulnerable families in Kenya who may otherwise go days without eating.

Fidyah & Kaffarah

What Is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a penalty required when someone deliberately breaks a fast in Ramadan without a valid reason.

It is more severe than Fidyah, reflecting the seriousness of intentionally breaking a fast.

How Is Kaffarah Paid?

Kaffarah can be fulfilled in one of two ways:

  1. Fasting continuously for 60 days, or
  2. Feeding 60 poor people for each deliberately broken fast

Most people choose the second option.

Mission Relief distributes Kaffarah by feeding 60 people per broken fast, providing dignity, nourishment, and hope to those living in food insecurity.

Who Must Pay Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is required if:

  • A fast is intentionally broken without a valid Islamic excuse
  • The fast is broken through eating, drinking, or marital relations during daylight hours of Ramadan

If you are unsure whether Fidyah or Kaffarah applies to your situation, we recommend seeking advice from a qualified scholar.

Where Your Fidyah & Kaffarah Goes

Your contribution directly supports:

  • Families affected by poverty and food shortages
  • Orphans and widows struggling to access daily meals
  • Communities facing drought and economic hardship in Kenya

Mission Relief ensures your Fidyah and Kaffarah are distributed correctly, promptly, and with dignity, in accordance with Islamic guidelines.
